San Diego’s near-perfect weather encourages al fresco dining year-round, and many of the best seats at local restaurants are those on the outdoor patios. But, when your family is eating on the patio and someone lights up nearby, what do you do? The Tobacco Free Communities Coalition, along with SmokeFreeSanDiego.org, are launching a campaign during Restaurant Week to educate San Diego County restaurant owners, restaurant workers, and diners about the benefits of smoke-free outdoor dining.

A special section has been added to SmokeFreeSanDiego.org on restaurants with smoke-free outdoor dining. The section contains a list of restaurants with smoke-free patios, cities that have policies which cover all restaurants, an interactive map, and a feedback form for restaurateurs to notify the website that their restaurant is 100% smoke free, both indoors and out.

Secondhand smoke is an unwanted side dish for most County residents. Not only is it an annoyance for diners, it can have adverse health effects such as increasing the risk for asthma attacks and heart attacks. Employees, who can be exposed to smoke throughout their shift, do not have the choice to avoid the area, and thus face greater health risks.

California voters know that secondhand smoke is harmful and they support less smoking in outdoor areas, including outdoor patio dining.

• 88% believe that secondhand smoke is harmful to those who inhale it in outdoor areas
• 60% have been bothered by secondhand smoke in outdoor dining areas in the past year.

Going 100% smoke free is good for business as well. Studies have repeatedly shown that smoke-free policies do not decrease the business activity of the restaurant and bar industry. In fact, a 2005 Zagat Restaurant National Survey reported that customers would eat out significantly more often because of smoke-free environments.
